You've probably been hearing a lot about El Niño lately. While nobody knows exactly what this winter will bring, forecasters are watching a strong El Niño pattern that could increase the chances of heavier rain, stronger storms, coastal flooding, and larger surf along California's coast.
For communities like Pacific Grove, Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, and other parts of the Monterey Peninsula, that means it's a good time to think about storm preparedness before the rainy season arrives.
Local agencies and Monterey County are already preparing by inspecting drainage systems, clearing culverts, restocking sandbags, and reviewing emergency response plans.
A Few Easy Ways to Prepare
✅ Clean out gutters, downspouts, and drains before the first major storm.
✅ Inspect trees for rot or disease, trim trees away from the home, keep balanced branches
✅ Know where water tends to collect around your house and make sure drains are clear.
✅ Consider keeping sandbags on hand if your property has had drainage or flooding issues in the past.
✅ Review your insurance coverage. Many homeowners are surprised to learn that standard policies typically don't cover flood damage.
✅ Sign up for Alert Monterey County so you'll receive emergency notifications if severe weather develops.
Don't Forget About the Trees
Trees are a huge part of life on the Monterey Peninsula. They add beauty and character to neighborhoods throughout Pacific Grove, Monterey, Pebble Beach, and Carmel, but during winter storms they can also create hazards.
Now is a great time to have trees inspected for rot or disease and trim branches that may have become overgrown or top-heavy. Heavy rain and strong winds can bring down weakened trees or large limbs, potentially damaging homes, vehicles, and power lines.
In fact, I've already noticed tree service crews working in several neighborhoods, including Pebble Beach and along Highway 68, thinning trees and removing potentially hazardous limbs ahead of storm season. It's a good reminder that preventative maintenance today can help avoid major problems later.
Special Considerations for Monterey & Pacific Grove
Living near the coast has plenty of benefits, but it can also bring unique challenges during winter storms. High surf, coastal flooding, bluff erosion, fallen trees, and power outages can sometimes affect neighborhoods near the shoreline. Areas around Monterey Bay may also see impacts during periods of high tides combined with large storm systems.
A strong El Niño doesn't automatically mean we'll have a severe winter, but it does mean it's smart to be prepared. Taking care of a few maintenance items now is a lot easier than dealing with water damage, fallen branches, or storm-related issues later. As always, every property is different. If you have questions about drainage, flood zones, coastal impacts, or tree safety, it's worth checking with the appropriate local agencies and professionals for guidance specific to your property.
Let's hope for the kind of winter we all like on the Peninsula: enough rain to keep everything green, but not enough to cause problems.
