Storm Season on the Monterey Peninsula: How to Stay Safe, Ready, and Resilient

When winter storms roll across the Monterey Peninsula, they bring more than just dramatic skies and the sound of surf pounding the rocks. Our coastal microclimates can turn quickly — high winds, saturated soil, king tides, and power outages often arrive together. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your home, your family, and your neighborhood safe.

Here’s a clear, local‑focused guide to getting storm‑ready.

1. Power Preparedness: Charge, Light, and Backup
• Charge everything ahead of time. Phones, laptops, portable battery packs — anything you rely on for communication or work should be fully charged before the storm arrives
• Keep flashlights accessible. Avoid candles during high‑wind events. LED lanterns and headlamps are safer and last longer.
• Consider a generator or backup battery system.Even a small portable generator or high‑capacity battery can keep essential devices running during extended outages. Make sure you know how to operate it safely and never use a generator indoors.
• Conserve electricity when the grid is stressed. If the power flickers but stays on, reduce usage to help prevent a full outage.

2. Protect Your Food and Appliances
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Cold air stays trapped longer than you think. A closed fridge can keep food safe for hours.
• Unplug sensitive electronics. Power surges are common during wind events. Surge protectors help, but unplugging is safest.

3. Prepare Your Property Before the Storm Hits
• Clear gutters and downspouts.Heavy rain overwhelms clogged drainage quickly, especially under Monterey pines and cypress.
• Check yard drains and driveway channels.Standing water can creep toward garages and foundations if drains are blocked.
• Secure outdoor furniture and décor.High winds can turn lightweight items into projectiles.
• Be mindful of trees. Saturated soil plus gusty winds often means falling branches — or entire trees.

4. Stay Off the Roads During Peak Winds
Driving during a wind advisory on the Peninsula is risky.Trees come down. Power lines come down. Visibility drops. If you must drive, choose main roads and avoid forested corridors when possible.

5. Respect the Coastline During Storm Surf
This is one of the most important reminders for our area.
• Stay back from the water during high surf and king tides.Sneaker waves and surging tides can sweep across rocks and parking lots with no warning.
• Avoid coastal trails and bluffs during peak wind.Erosion and unstable edges are common after heavy rain. The ocean is mesmerizing during a storm, but it’s also unpredictable.

Storms are part of life on the Monterey Peninsula — dramatic, beautiful, and occasionally disruptive. Staying ready isn’t just practical; it’s part of being a resilient coastal community.
